Does Your Dog Have Anxiety?

From rescue dogs to pure mutts or pure pedigrees, it doesn’t matter any dog can have anxiety.

Some pups develop anxiety for short periods while others have the condition for their entire life.

While it’s hard to assess, some experts estimate that between 20 and 40% of all dogs have anxiety. We, dog owners of special dogs, are not alone!

Anxiety is based on fear, when we feel threatened. As a dog owner we need to work with our pets to ensure they are safe. while taking our responsibility for the safety of others seriously.

Signs of anxiety include:

  • Aggression
  • Drooling
  • Panting
  • Destructive behavior
  • Excessive barking
  • Restlessness
  • Repetitive or compulsive behaviors

While some dogs will exhibit shaking and withdrawal symptoms, others resort to the ‘fight’ over flight.

This can happen in the home but anxiety increases when we are out on a walk.

For owners we have options, some good, some average, some difficult. Drug them! So many dogs these days are medicated, others are marched off to puppy training. For some there are solutions that are not good for the dog or for the carer.

If the aggression is too bad some people simply hide their dog away and don’t have people around. It’s not a good option for you or the dog.
